Bayelsa state government has declared this Friday public holiday in order for voters who registered in the deep riverside and on the fringe of the Atlantic Ocean to go home and exercise their franchise.

Governor Seriake Dickson said that the decision became pertinent because movement in the waterways would be restricted on Election Day.

Besides, since most communities are sometimes over five hours' boat ride from the state capital, Yenagoa, it would be dangerous to allow them to travel in the night along the waterways.

Dickson, who made the declaration in a live broadcast, said the decision to declare a public holiday was to enable voters participate in the accreditation exercise at their registered polling centres, given the peculiar terrain of the state and appealed to the people to turn out en masse to cast their votes for their preferred candidates
